Outdoor Lighting Guideline #1

Light Only What Needs to be Lit

This might sound funny at first, but... many times, you'll find lights installed in places that really have no need for a light in the first place. Don't believe me? How about the following:

  1. Lights on the sides of homes and buildings where there are no entrances
  2. Lights on top of lights. I kid you not. At least two examples come to mind (I'll try to update this page with one or both). A major shopping center in the Park City area has tall street lights in the parking area. Well, where the parking lot meets several of the pedestrian area... short "period" lights are mounted directly under the taller parking area lights
  3. Lights covering area that are not frequented after hours.
