Learn how Light Pollution Threatens Your Health as well as the wildlife that we share the planet with. Sea Turtles are at particular risk.

Sea Turtle Friendly Outdoor Lighting

If you're familiar with dark sky lighting requirements, you're halfway there. Turtle Friendly Lighting goes beyond "dark sky" lighting requirements however, in that it also speaks to the type of light produced by your fixture as well as the way your fixture is mounted.
Turtle Friendly Lighting has 3 principles:
  • Keep It Shielded - Also a dark sky principle - All light is directed down to the ground
  • Keep It Long - Use only long wavelength "turtle friendly" light bulbs
  • Keep It Low - Lower mounting heights are less likely to invade critical turtle nesting areas
All of the full cutoff lights featured in our Turtle Friendly Lighting section may be combined with special turtle friendly bulbs for the ultimate in turtle friendly lighting. The combination of full cutoff optics and "turtle friendly" light output has been proven to be the least disruptive outdoor lighting solution for sensitive turtle nesting areas.

FWC Marine Turtle ProgramImproper outdoor lighting is probably one of the greatest issues affecting sea turtles - Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

Let's face it... light pollution and sea turtles just don't go together. Many species are on the verge of extinction... and improper outdoor lighting is a major cause.

There are two aspects to turtle friendly lighting:

  1. Light Control - This is where turtle friendly lighting and night sky friendly lighting are one in the same. By putting light only on the ground, we keep it away from turtle nesting areas.
  2. Light Spectrum - This is where the two diverge a bit. Turtle friendly lamps are monochromatic.. .ie... emit light within a very narrow range of the spectrum. Starry Night Lights now carries Turtle Safe Coated Lamps which filter out all but a very narrow band of light... in a range that is not harmful to sea turtles.

turtle friendly lightingThe odd looking light pictured at right is a Turtle Safe Lamp. It is a typical  compact fluorescent bulb with a special filtered coating applied to it. This coating limits the light output of this bulb to a very narrow range of the visible spectrum... thereby greatly reducing the impact on nearby sea turtles. As you'd expect, you can find this light in our turtle friendly lighting section.
Here's another seriously turtle friendly light fixture from the folks over at AC Lighting Design. This is the ACL-DSF-120. It wears its support for turtles on the outside. Click on the image... there are cute little turtles on the fixture :) But, don't let its good looks fool you. This is one turtle friendly fixture. With the bulb tucked up nicely inside, this full cutoff light fixture won't glare upon potential turtle nesting grounds.

Sea Turtle Friendly Outdoor Light ShadeHere's another great idea from the folks at Progress Lighting. This Sea Turtle friendly outdoor light shade provides additional shielding of the light source to achieve "turtle-friendly" illumination.

Sea Turtles Light pollution from local communities is  threatening large segments of the sea turtle population. In fact, all sea turtles in Florida are either classified as threatened or endangered. For more information about the danger of lighting to turtles,  checkout FloridaToday.com

By insisting on turtle friendly outdoor lighting, you can help these and many other species cope with human encroachment of their habitats.
