sky friendly
outdoor lighting in an attempt to reduce the affects of light pollution. Yours might be next? Why not install attractive, high
quality night sky friendly outdoor lighting products on your home or
business. |
There's really nothing complex about using wildlife friendly outdoor
lighting. If you follow a few simple guidelines, you'll dramatically reduce
your impact on wildlife.
|
The three criteria that
MUST be met for a fixture to be deemed “Wildlife Friendly Lighting” under
the FWCC, USFWS Official Marine Turtle Lighting Course are:
- Keep it low. (Fixtures should be mounted as low as practicable for the task)
- Keep it shielded and downward directed. (Use only full cut-off fixtures
FCOs as defined by the IESNA - or fixtures with the bulb/lamp/lens
shielded from line-of-sight of the beach) (Of course, this is all we sell
at Starry Night Lights!)
- Keep it long. (Use longer wavelength light sources such as LPS, red or
amber LEDs, yellow "bug" lights, true red neon, or TSL filtering which
filters short wavelengths and minimizes light scatter in the atmosphere.
This is typically 580nm or longer)
